CHAPTER SEVEN
DAIR
It was absolute madness.
Jai and Valda were practically shoving each other to get to Carlyle, and Kana was hissing at Toro, who was shouting something about being able to feel the water in Carlyleâs body.
The rest of us were doing a frenzied dance of trying to stay close without getting in the way.
âFuck, watch out,â Toro yelled, diving under the water as Carlyle let out a terrifying sort of keening noise, her eyes rolling back into her head.
âGet her out of the goddamn water,â Jai shouted, sending Killian and Sol stumbling backward with a blast of his ice magic. Jack cursed and rushed to help them up, and I whipped around to tell my mother to stop procuring useless hospital items.
Where the hell was Neva? Jazira and Eber should have been back with her already. Why werenât we better prepared than this?
âDair,â Toro cried, and I swiveled back to find the fish standing waist-deep at the edge of the pool near me. His eyes were wide, and he was cradling a tiny, dark-headed baby in his arms.
He looked up at me, and the moment froze.
My child. Our child.
Sheâd been born already, almost unnoticed in the chaos around her. Silent and more beautiful than the night sky she resembled.
âOh, fuck, Iâm going to be sick,â Jack cried behind me, and I staggered away from the perfection of my daughter in time to see the dragon hit the ground, heaving. Killian had passed out cold, and Sol was looking frantically from the fae to Carlyle, uncertain as the rest of us what to do.
âI need another hand,â Valda yelled, and her magic landed on me this time, sucking my mind into hers. I landed on my knees before my Queen, my Goddess, whose body was spread wide before me, wet and bloody and writhing.
âIâve got her,â Kana cried, as she and Jai wrenched Carlyleâs shoulders down to the ground and held her still.
Valda pressed her hand hard against Carlyleâs swollen belly, and our strong, beautiful Qilin moaned a string of filthy curses, but it was enough. I reached for the tiny body Valda was coaxing into the world, my fingers tangling in the wet, strawberry-hued curls as I gathered the baby to my chest in awe.
My suit and shoes were covered in blood and birthing fluid, but for the first time I could remember, I cared nothing for that. All of me was wrapped in the perfection of two tiny hazel eyes staring up at me. My son.
As Carlyle quieted, so did the others.
âOur son,â Jai whispered, joining me and tugging me closer so Carlyle could see the baby.
âAnd our daughter,â Toro added, bringing the girl to her as Killian finally came to, blinking around him at how much had changed.
Carlyle dissolved into smiles and tears as all of her mates began to press around her, the other family falling back to let us create this moment.
âTheyâre beautifulâ¦so, so perfect,â Carlyle whispered, sniffling as the babies squirmed and tested their tiny lungs.
